Here is a section of the book that explains how to trim the bars:
The Bars:
The bars are insensitive so you can start by trimming down the bars to be level with sole. This also opens the pathway for the nippers to be used at the appropriate depth on the hoof wall.
Once cut, the angle of the bars will be the same as the angle of the frog.
This book is designed to help horse owners learn the complete trimming process from beginning to end. By being able to trim your horse's feet you will save money on farrier work and will have the satisfaction of knowing that your horse's hooves are properly cared for. By maintaining your horse's feet on a regular basis you will continue to preserve their soundness, which enhances the overall health of your horse.

Im not sure if you can help me or not. We were given three minis last fall. We were trying to find a local farrier to come out and trim them when i noticed that one of the minis hind hooves are really really bad. they seem to be growing in towards one another...like a taco. Can this be corrected by a farrier or is it something that the vet should look at. she is 20 years old and front hooves need to be trimmed but not like the hind. thanks for any help you can give me
